Vehicle Overview

This 1959 Porsche 356A 1600S coupe was originally delivered via Sonauto of Paris, France on March 12, 1959 and was imported by Volkswagen Espanola of Madrid, Spain later that year before being sold to its first owner in New York. It remained in California from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, after which it was relocated to Illinois and Michigan, where it was acquired by the current owner in 2021.

The Reutter-built bodywork left the factory in Meissen Blue (703) and was previously repainted ivory. Subsequent work involved overhauls of the 1.6-liter flat-four, dual Zenith carburetors, and four-speed manual transaxle along with replacing the shocks. The car is equipped with fiberglass Euro-style bumpers and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. Further exterior details include a left bullet-style mirror, Hella headlight assemblies, gold-finished badging, and a single exhaust outlet.

Chrome-finished 15? ventilated steel wheels are wrapped in 185/65 Ultra Metric HR Steel Belted tires, while a full-size spare is stored in the trunk compartment. The shocks and rubber bushings were replaced in 2021. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drums.

The interior shows nice bucket seats that have been re-trimmed in brown leatherette complemented by a matching dash pad, door panels, and rear jump seat. Oatmeal squareweave carpets cover the floors, and patterned mats and black rubber floor linings have been fitted up front. A wooden shift knob is installed and the Solid State push-button radio. A five-digit odometer shows 26k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership and the removed stock steering wheel is included in the sale.

Engine stamping #83528 and Gearbox stamping #26627 are listed on the Kardex, showing this to be a numbers-matching example. Various body stamping numbers can also be found, showing all panels to be original to this car. The Kardex shows delivery via Sonauto of Paris, France, as well as the factory color, options, and powertrain numbers.
